Schrijversgroep ’77 is the largest, oldest, and easily the most active writers association in Suriname. This association contributes markedly towards the development of Surinamese literature, makes a strong effort on behalf of the intellectual and social interests of its members, and supports and maintains a growing international literary network.

Regular activities include but are not limited to:

  1. Monthly evening performances every last Wednesday of the month held in the artistic café Tori Oso.
  2. A weekly radio talk show via SRS ( www.radiosrs.com ) every Tuesday night.
  3. Weekly newsletters by email

The year 2007 marked the initiative of Diversity is Power – a literary festival held in collaboration with South African writers, which was launched in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. 2008 marks the follow up of this Diversity is Power exchange, which was held in October in South Africa. Over the last couple of years Schrijversgroep 77 has actively participated in literary activities, book fairs, and events in Santo Domingo, Venezuela, Trinidad, Miami, Grenada, Guyana (Carifesta X), and the Netherlands

The members of Schrijversgroep 77 are of very diverse plumage. Besides the prose and poetry writers there is a scattering of songwriters, journalist, reviewers, academics, and bookstore owners who are active within the association.

Members receive email information about/on upcoming activities and newsworthy briefings, notifications, convocations, as well as queries and appeals for support and participation.

Members are encouraged via email to read each others work, comment, critique, exchange ideas, and make proposals for collaborative and individual efforts towards activities and participations.
